THE CELLULITE!

First off, I really have to thank the guys for talking about “the cellulite” as Gerimi called it. (Women’s Bodies: Part 2) These guys are super aware of what a touchy subject this can be for women and they just dove into it.

I myself have cellulite and have my days of being so concerned about it, I’m not sure I will ever put on shorts or a bikini ever again. So this was just as good for me to hear as any of you women who watched and were terrified of what they might say about it.

But as we heard, it just wasn’t that big of a deal. Cellulite is so blown out of proportion by our culture and the beauty industry. Sometimes it feels like if I don’t feel ashamed of my cellulite, I’m doing something wrong.

I read that 80-95% of women have cellulite somewhere on their body. When you Google cellulite, words like “epidemic”, “cure” and “treatment” come up. But this is not an epidimic to be solved. This is not the the flippin’ bubonic plague. It is, as unexciting as this may sound, normal! It is not a defect in our bodies or our skin and it has nothing to do with whether you are overweight or not.

As we heard, men look at, appreciate and adore the whole package – yes, your whole beautiful body.

And, like Jason said, none of his friends got a divorce because she has cellulite or gained weight!

Will we as a culture ever tone it down about the “epidemic” of cellulite? I don’t know. But I can imagine that when we as women tone it down and let the world know we love ourselves exactly as we are, that might be the beginnings of something different.

The cellulite thing totally hits home for me too. I’ve made a pact with myself not to wear shorts in public anymore, precisely because I don’t ever want to wonder if my upper thighs are being gazed upon with disgust. And it’s not about weight: as a 5′7″ fourteen year old who weighed 90 pounds, I STILL had cellulite. It’s just there, it just is, WHO CARES???? (Well, me. I’m still not wearing shorts.)
